Reindeer Dictogloos

Reindeers are covered in hair from their nose to the bottom of their feet (hooves). The hairy hooves may look funny, but they give reindeer a good grip when walking on frozen ground, ice, mud, and snow. Reindeer are the only deer species to have hair completely covering their nose. Their specialized nose helps to warm incoming cold air before it enters their lungs, and it's also an excellent sniffer.

Reindeers like to eat herbs, ferns, mosses, grasses, shoots, fungi and leaves. On average, an adult reindeer eats around 9 to 18 lbs. (4 to 8 kg) of vegetation a day, according to the San Diego Zoo. In the winter, reindeer must dig through the snow to find food.

Both male and female reindeer grow antlers, while in most other deer species, only the males have antlers. Unlike horns, antlers fall off and grow back larger each year.

Male reindeer begin to grow antlers in February and female reindeer in May. Males drop their antlers in November, leaving them without antlers until the following spring, while females keep their antlers through the winter until their calves are born in May.

Santa's reindeer were first named in a poem `A Visit from St. Nicholas' (aka `'Twas the Night Before Christmas') first published anonymously in the Troy, New York Sentinel on December 23, 1823, authorship being generally attributed to Clement Clarke Moore.
